Julie Ditrich Presents Comics Masterclass at the Australian Cartoonists’ Association Conference

ACA-Julie DitrichACA PosterBlack Mermaid Productions’ (BMP) partner and comic book writer Julie Ditrich will be presenting an information session on the new Comics Masterclass arm of BMP at the upcoming Australian Cartoonists’ Association (ACA) Stanley Awards and Conference in mid November. Julie will talk about this new professional development service that provides comics script and sequential art assessments, short courses and training for the next generation of Australian comics creators. Julie Regan will discuss the benefits of Creativity Coaching, and Lyndall Briggs will addresses creatives who are struggling with inner life issues such as anxiety and depression that may be hampering their success.

The event features an extraordinary line up of cartooning and comics talent including Nicola Scott, Pat Grant, Madeleine Rosca, Bernard Caleo, Steve Panozzo, Peter Lewis, Mark Knight, Nigel Buchanan, Jon Sommariva, David Rower, Sarah Catherine First, Warren Brown, Mike Bowers, David Pope and many others.

The Conference will be followed by the Stanley Awards on the Saturday night.

Comics Taste Test Workshop at Ashfield Library

Comic ConVersation LogoBlack Mermaid Productions partner and comic book writer Julie Ditrich will be presenting a workshop entitled “A Comics Taste Test: An Introduction to the Comics Medium” at Ashfield Library in September 2014 as part of the inaugural Comics Con-versation event.

The one hour workshop will cover the following content:

‘Comics’ is often mistaken for a literary genre but it is anything but… In fact, comics encompasses six different formats (including comic books and graphic novels), which act as delivery systems for multiple story genres. This presentation defines what comics is all about, and introduces participants to the scope and versatility, as well as the accessibility of its unique storytelling approach that captures and entrances readers across all genders, generations and backgrounds.

Business of Comics Seminar

logoBlack Mermaid Productions’ director Julie Ditrich will be presenting a one day seminar in Sydney in May 2014 entitled “The Comics Business: From Idea to Print”, which is part of the Australian Society of Authors’ (ASA) professional development program.

The course will guide participants through the process of creating a comic book or graphic novel from story development and scripting to assembling a creative team, art production, pitching to publishers, self publishing, distribution and marketing.

Participants will gain an understanding of the end-to-end comics creation and production process, as well as the workings of the Australian pop culture scene. They will also learn how to manage relationships with artists, designers, printers, editors and other key parties involved in the successful publication of a comic book or graphic novel.

Becoming Dr Frankenstein Comics Characterisation Workshop

The workshop is entitled: “Becoming Dr Frankenstein: How to Create Fabulous Comic Book Characters”. The workshop content includes the following:

All great comic book and graphic novel stories start with great characters whether they are heroes, villains or other archetypes. This beginner’s workshop shows you how to create a character profile from scratch by identifying and patching together the physiological, psychological and energetic components that make up your lead and supporting players.

Animal Magic Characterisation Workshop

Animal Human FacesBlack Mermaid Productions™ (BMP) professional development arm Comics Masterclass™ will be launching the first of its information sessions and workshops in Sydney, Australia in May 2014. The session is aimed at both comics writers and comics artists who want to advance their characterisation skills. The FREE workshop is entitled ”Animal Magic: How to Use Animal Archetypes to Create Unique Human Comic Book Characters“, and will be presented by BMP Director and comics writer Julie Ditrich. The workshop will be 90 minutes in duration and will be preceded by a one hour information session that answers questions on the Comics Masterclass™ comic script and art assessment service, as well as creativity coaching and other services, and provides participants with an opportunity to meet the team. Xmas Black Mermaid® “Snow Globe” Design Released

BlackMermaidXmas2013Black Mermaid Productions™ (BMP) has just released its annual Xmas design in the Black Mermaid® range of artwork. This year’s image consists of a the Black Mermaid® celebrating the silly season from within a snow globe. The design fits comfortably into this iconic collection, which also features a mer angel, a mer fairy with holly wings, a mer elf and the mer decorating a starfish-topped Xmas tree.

Designed by Jozef Szekeres, the BMP Black Mermaid® silhouetted logo, which is beloved by many fans and who indeed has a Facebook page of her own, is the star of the entire gallery of artwork.

Halloween Black Mermaid® “Mer Mummy” Design Released

BlackMermaidHalloween2013Black Mermaid Productions™ (BMP) has just released its annual Halloween design in the Black Mermaid® range of artwork. This year’s image consists of a mer mummy and fits comfortably in the horror oriented collection, which also features a mer zombie, mer ghost, mer witch and mer vampire.

Designed by Jozef Szekeres, this piece is also a departure from the more animated stylisation of previous designs.

The BMP Black Mermaid® silhouetted logo, which is beloved by many fans and who indeed has a Facebook page of her own, is the star of this design and the rest.
